👨‍💻 What is VLSI? 🤔 Your Beginner's Guide to Chip Design & Microchips

post

VLSI basics made easy! Explore the world of chip design & how tiny microchips power everything.

Have you ever wondered how your smartphone, laptop or smartwatch works? Inside all these device there are powerful chips and these chips are made of technology called VLSI , which stands for Very Large Scale Integration. Lets explore what VLSI is, why it is trending  and how to start a career in VLSI field.

What is VLSI ?

VLSI is a technology of placing millions and billions of tiny electronic components like transistors, resistors and capacitors onto a single chip it is called as an integrated circuit or IC.

Why is VLSI Important Today?

VLSI is the heart of modern electronics. It powers smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops, smart watches, cars with automatic features, robots, AI machines and Satellites. Without VLSI we wouldn’t have the advancement in technology we use every day.

How VLSI design works
VLSI design has two main parts
1.Front-End Design
In front-end  there are different types of roles
a.design and verification engineer
Skills needed for design and verification are digital design, VERILOG  HDL ,system VERILOG, UVM(universal verification methodology). They do simulation and verification to check if the chip works correctly .
b.DFT(design for test-ability )
Skills needed for DFT are scan chains, ATPG.These ensure the chip can be tested easily after production.

2.Back-End Design
In back -end  there  are different types of roles
a.physical design engineer
Skills needed for a physical design engineer  digital design, CMOS, TCL(tool command language)or Perl or python.Physical design is depended on nanometre technology like 2nm,3nm.They  work on placing and routing all parts on the chip.
b.analog layout
Skills needed for a analog layout engineer is CMOS .These draw circuits for signals like sound, temperature and light.

How to start learning VLSI ?
If you are a B tech or M tech student especially in ECE or EEE ,you can start with:
Basics of Digital Electronics
Learn VERILOG HDL and practice small projects
Work on tools and real chip design flow
Chose your path-front-end or back-end

Top companies hiring VLSI professionals including Intel, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, AMD, Apple, Samsung, TSMC, Micron and WIPRO.

VLSI is a growing and powerful field that plays a big role in modern technology. If you enjoy electronics, coding,or building smart systems ,VLSI could be the perfect carrier for you .IT offers good pay, string demand, and exiting work is designing the future of tech.
